All students of Kyu grade (colour belts) must participate
on the grading evening, although they may choose not to grade.
When students reach 1st Kyu (brown/black stripe), they may only grade
with the approval of their instructor.

The grading course consists of four stages up to 6th Kyu (green belt),
all of which must be completed to the satisfaction of
the grading panel before further progress can be made

1) Kihon

Single and combination moves.
Consists of moves as laid down in the the club grading syllabus which must be performed correctly.
2) Kata

A set of techniques performed on the floor, demonstrating various techniques. Two set kata are performed specific to grade, individually, then as a group. Assessment is made on correctness, and timing.
3) Kumite

Students perform fixed  or free fighting techniques and counters.  Fixed fighting techniques up to 7th Kyu, semi/free for more advanced grades.
4) Taiiku
All students up to 6th Kyu have timed
 exercises to perform.

A fail in any section will result in a half grade only. Any student receiving a half grade will
have to appear at the start of the next grading to have their grade confirmed
before another grade can be attempted.

In this case they will need to repeat the original grading. On successful completion they
will be allowed to sit their next grading the same day if they wish.

Dan grades are more complex and are held over two practical grading classes,
with a final written assessment thereafter.  Dan grades may
only be applied for after at least one year with
Livingston Karate Club.
